Weekly journal, week of December 1st

This is just a little Sharpie drawing I did on a scrap piece of cardboard. Sometimes I like to use colors (in this case they were watercolor pencils).

One of my roommates did this piece on an old cardboard box. I think it's amazing how many different ideas are incorporated into it.

For once, I have a title for my art: "Dill Noir."

Weekly journal, week of November 2nd

I think that sometimes it's important to remember what it's like to be a child, to draw something simple and innocent, like a handprint turkey for Thanksgiving.

This is a work in progress, using Sharpie. I used to make this kind of thing all the time and they took no time at all. But now, for some reason, I have a hard time being that impulsive, creating without thinking about it. I'm trying to get back into that frame of mind.

Weekly journal, week of October 26th

I did three sketches this week, and I've still been experimenting with pen. For some reason I was inspired by nature this week. I drew this bird from my own mind, so the proportions are a bit off and I need to learn how to draw bird feet. The second sketch is a leaf, also out of my mind. With this one, I was mostly experimenting with texture. The third is inspired by nature and the spirit of halloween; a pumpkin named Charlie. I knew that I could draw a sphere, but I wasn't sure if I could draw the surface of a pumpkin.

Here's a tree I sketched. I wanted to experiment with textures and shading with ink.

This is a talented beetle named George. He says hullo. I've been trying to work on simple sketches with clean lines recently.

Weekly journal, week of October 12th

Here's a little bit of Halloween spirit, in the form of a spider named Caligula. Again, I wanted to try something more like a cartoon than realistic.

I love to color. It's a fact of life. Here in particular, I experimented with color combinations and possibilities within the medium (watercolor pencils).

I saw "The Shawshank Redemption" for the first time this weekend. It's a magnificent story, and brilliantly executed at that, but one thing that caught my attention was something that most film makers wouldn't attempt, or even think of. The entire story takes place over twenty years, but there are none of the usual devices to indicate the passage of time. No changing seasons or anything like that. The whole story flows seamlessly, giving a sense that though many of the inmates have been on the "inside" for decades, nothing really changes (Red sums this up by saying that "Prison life consists of routine. And then more routine."). This unconventional device is incredibly effective.
